About this image:
This photograph was made by my brother Hale Stephenson around 1976. The camera looks west from our pier on the north shore of the Pamlico River about 7 miles from downtown “little” Washington, N.C. where we grew up. About one hundred yards east of this location was an African-American beach called Griffin’s Beach. Thelonious Monk’s late cousin Gaston Monk, a longtime school teacher and NAACP leader in Pitt County, N.C., told me he took his family and his students to Griffin’s regularly. About ten miles down the river from here, near Bath, the water starts getting brackish and thirty miles beyond that is the Pamlico Sound. The legendary dish from this water is Rock Fish Stew. Here is a longer piece I wrote about this picture.
