Here’s W. Eugene Smith’s stainless steel darkroom sink, custom made in the 1950s. In 2012 I had it repurposed into a standing desk by metal artist Leo Gaev who made no changes to the original object. Photos by Kate Joyce, March 2017. (Gene Smith’s Sink).
The desk is beautiful as well as meaningful. So glad to see a piece of Gene’s history in good hands. I just pre-ordered the biography and can hardly wait to read it!
As a lifelong fan of Gene’s work i am incredibly envious of you for being lucky enopugh to own such a historic item, what a wonderful place to sit and do your research surrounded by something of central importance to a huge wealth of your writing.
To think almost every print since the Jazz Loft onwards would have gone through there is treuly remarkable. For me he is the ultimate photographer – his intensity to any subject, how he wanted to show the personality emotions and the feelings of his subject in its fullest detail, refusing to get sidetracked to the point of financial and emotional ruin. He gets a good seat at the fantasy dinner table for me
I also cant wait for the new book to arrive.
