When not writing books and shorter pieces, Sam Stephenson is founder and director of Rock Fish Stew Institute of Literature and Materials, a documentary company based in Durham, North Carolina that approaches projects with an organic, wide-angled, story-finding impulse in which listening and searching without goals in mind are key. As Simone Weil wrote, attention without object is a form of prayer. Rock Fish Stew has completed two major projects in its short history: Bull City Summer: A Season at the Ball Park (2014) and Big, Bent Ears: A Serial of Documentary Uncertainty, a collaboration with New York’s legendary literary journal, The Paris Review.
